Bringin' stitchin' back

I've always loved crafts and creative outlets so when a couple of girls at BSF started showing off thier cross stitch and crewel embroidery, I knew it was calling my name!

Crewel embroidery is done with wool and is gorgeous but you have to know a bunch of different stitches.

Last week I went to a local needle arts shop and the shopkeeper told me cross stitch was for me- you only need to know one stitch!  Plus, she had a trunk show of a new designer and the finished, framed pieces looked like something I'd spend big bucks for.

I chose a Christmas design and the shopkeeper spent an hour explaining all I needed to know.

The hardest part at home was finding the starting point on my fabric and figuring out stitch two! But once I got that down, I was off!

I have most afternoons free after work, so I've been able to spend chunks of time cross stitching and I love it! It's so rewarding and time flies by.

Here's it is so far...but I have more to add. Stay tuned for an update...

Happy Birthday, Baby!

I knew months ago that I wanted to make Chris's 35th birthday a little extra special so I kept our plans a surprise from him. I did some research and found a carpenter in Jasper, Florida (where Chris's Mama Jan was from) and knew a custom glider was perfect for him! Not only was it special because it's from Jasper but because benches (and gliders are benches that...glide) have had a sweet spot in our love story.

So on Chris's birthday we hit the road for the two hour trip to Jasper...though Chris didn't know where we were going till we were about 15 minutes out!  The carpenter lived down a very country driveway in a very country house and worked in a very worked-in country workshop. I think Chris was wondering exactly where I had taken him!  But the surprise was so exciting and the finished glider is beautiful!

The perfect seat for two lovebirds...

After lunch we headed to the Stephen Foster State Park that's nearby. Stephen Foster wrote the song that made the Suwannee River famous. Not sure why, but they built a huge bell tower in his honor. The park is pretty rustic except for the grand bell tower.

Way down upon the Suwannee River...

How appropriate for the next day's Gator victory over the Bulldogs...chomp, chomp!

We had a yummy picnic...despite busloads of school kids who decided Chris's birthday was also the best day for a field trip to the park!

The birthday celebration continued Sunday afternoon with dinner with the Brooks family. The glider is too nice to put outside so for the time being, it's a new love seat! Worked well with having the family over!

Memom gave Chris a pen set with a map of Jacksonville.

I decided to try my hand at tiramisu for Chris's birthday treat. He loves all things coffee so I poured over recipes to find the best non-alcoholic, no-raw-eggs recipe.

It was a hit!

I even found giraffe candles!

We love stretching birthdays out as long as possible so I enjoyed our weekend celebrating my sweetheart! Happy birthday, Baby!
