Descriptions & Highlights

In case you're wondering how I spend my hours at UNA, here's a quick overview of my classes:

Interior Materials & Codes

This class is supposed to be about types of building materials and safety codes...but so far, I've learned more about my teacher's political opinions and his days as a Rolling Stones groupie!  Maybe he'll get to the point soon!

Space Planning

I'm really enjoying this class!  It's considered a studio class and is about 3 hours long, so we do a lot of sketching.  Our instructor encourages us to work quickly, so it's like speed decorating!  I've already learned a lot and the time spent in the class or doing assignments doesn't feel like a wonderful to have a creative outlet!

Design I

I'm glad this class is another studio and not lecture, since it's at 8am!  My instructor is young and new to UNA and has been very kind and patient.  This class has a mixture of art students...and then the rest of us!  I'm not an "artist" so each class is a brand new learning experience, but I'm really enjoying learning about the different types of mediums and techniques.  Don't laugh, but here are the hand sketches I worked on earlier this week:

I used individual vertical strips of paper to create this collage:

Human Growth & Development

I expected this class to be dry and boring, but I'm loving it too!  My teacher has a great sense of humor and handles delicate subjects pretty well.  So far we've studied conception and the birth process, including watching a birth video!  Of course, I cried during the video!  Even though the text and video don't mention our Creator God, I was in awe at His obvious role in creating life.  I ended up having a party in my heart, praising the Lord!

Overall, things are going well!  I'm still making friends, getting good use out of my rain boots and listening to more Rick & Bubba than I have in my whole life combined!

Thanks for checking in!

To my Blog, on your 2nd birthday

Dear Blog,

It seems like just yesterday, that you were a newborn.  I remember your first wobbly days, as "Aunt Jennifer" helped me get you launched.  We were so proud.

I still am.

Some of your favorite things these days are getting new backgrounds...they look so pretty on you!  You also love being updated from my makes you feel so cutting edge!

You have so many new friends, who like spending time with you and sometimes they leave sweet notes for you.

To celebrate your second birthday, I made a book with all your entries, that way we can look back and remember all the good times we've had together.

I have no doubt that you will continue to grow.  Happy birthday, dear blog!  May you have many more...

Five days down, ____ to go

Well, I've made it through my first five days of classes at UNA!

For the most part, it's gone pretty smoothly. Granted, it would have been easier to get here by boat a few days, but the rain is gone and today's commute (at 5:45 am!) was beautiful! I realize that to many of you, 5:45 am isn't particularly early, but I'm not a morning person and every morning is a victory! I think I was the first person at the Athen's CFA....they didn't have all the lights in yet! Nothing says "Good Morning" like a giant Coke Zero!

One benefit of early mornings are the breathtaking sunrises! I had to pull over and snap this:

I've had several surreal moments over the last week. Mostly ones of disbelief that I'm actually doing this or moments of gripping fear that there is no way I can do it.

But as I've faced those fears head on, the Lord's given me a few verses to strengthen me.

From my BSF lesson:

2 Thessalonians 3:16
"Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way."

From "Jesus Calling":

Philippians 4:6-7
"Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life."

I can honestly say that despite the occasional stresses, I'm happier with what my life looks like now than I've been in a very long time.

These first five days are just a drop in the bucket of this journey I'm on but I'm eager to see what's in store...and how the Lord will see me through it!

Already Learnin'

As I'm waiting for my second class of the day to start, I'm sitting in the student commons, working on my BSF lesson and watching people.

So far in my classes, it's all just basic intros, so there's not much to report on that front.

But I have already learned a lot from being back at college:

1. I need comfortable, weather-proof shoes. A new friend from yesterday was wearing a cute pair, so I went last night and found them on sale at Stein Mart. My feet are so cozy!

2. There's a great Southern Gospel radio station I can pick up in Athens! That helps any road trip!

3. Finding a parking spot at noon is a nightmare....but finding a spot at 7:30am is a breeze!

4. The ten years that separates me from most college newbies is hilariously obvious! I think I was the only person in this morning's class speaking, smiling or making eye contact!

5. Although I'm addicted to my iPhone, I think I'm going to need a good ol' fashioned paper assignment least till I get in my groove!

6. As delicious as Kellogg's Fruit Crisps are, they do not travel well in my tote bag. Oh well, I can eat crumbs!

I'm glad to have the "firsts" over with. I don't like change so the Lord is certainly stretching me, while showing Himself faithful and strong.

The best news? Monday's a holiday, so I already have a day off!

The Great Adventure

Tomorrow {1-11-12} is the first day of my Great Adventure! My classes at UNA start tomorrow with two Interior Design classes- Interior Materials & Codes and Space Planning. My Tuesday/Thursday classes are Art Design and Human Growth & Development. I'm also taking Business Systems online. I'm glad to start down this road and thankful for the Lord's provision and guidance. But I do ask for you all to be praying for me as I adjust. Knowing my sweet friends are lifting me up in prayer is the greatest gift I could have! I do plan on continuing my decorating/organizing services while in school, so let me know if I can help you with anything! Gotta go pack my backpack and choose my school clothes :) - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
